Sir Francis Drake's house - with a garden made in the twentieth century. It has a box parterre planted with herbs. In 1842, Loudon saw the place merely as 'an old place situated in a bottom, chiefly remarkable for having been the residence of the circumnavigator Drake'. We can now recognise Buckland's meadows, orchards and woods as characteristically Elizabethan (and Renaissance) estate features. The fencing of the re-created garden is also Elizabethan.
