As well as being a calm and beautiful garden, Cotehele is a wonderful example of a landscape transition from a terraced area near the house, through a gardenesque woodland garden to the sublimity of the sea shore. The late-medieval granite house has a terraced garden (1862) overlooking a sheltered valley which is planted with exotic and tender plants. It belonged to the Edgecumbe family, which owned Mount Edgecumbe, until 1947. The house and the dovecote are medieval - and very fine. The woodland valley garden is late Victorian, with a picturesque/gardenesque character.
