The Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, well known to
William Kent as an example of a pagan temple in a classical landscape, must be regarded as a key source of inspiration for 'English landscape gardens' designed, as they were, to re-create the Arcadian landscape of antiquity. The Temple of Vesta, in its turn, was inspired by Ancient Greek temples in sacred groves, like the temple of Athena Pronaia at
Delphi.
