Calke Abbey is being preserved as 'a graphic illustration of the English country house in decline'. When this architectural policy was launched, Gardenvisit wondered about adopting a similar policy for the walled garden and pleasure ground. Instead, and probably rightly, the gardens are being immaculately maintained in the design style of a former age: the high Victorian Mixed Style. The flower beds (see photo, left) are arranged as in a design by Edward Kemp. The gardens include an 18th century glass domed orangery, walled gardens, physic garden, peach house and the unique Auricula Theatre (see photo, left).
