Burton Agnes Hall Garden

An Elizabethan Hall with a twentieth century garden. Robert Smithson (or Smythson) drew a plan for the Hall but it was modified. Burton Agnes may have had a renaissance garden (like Wollaton Hall) and as suggested by the compartments bordered by clipped yews. The house is surrounded by lawns and clipped yews. In 1990, the walled kitchen garden was laid out with a maze, colour theme gardens, herbaceous borders and a 'jungle garden' of bamboos and exotics. Burton Agnes holds the National Collection of Campanulas. The flower garden has a games motif centering on chess board. Other games are in separate gardens and sculpture by various artists is displayed.
