Shah Abbas the Great ruled Persia from 1588 to 1629. After strengthening the Safavid dynasty by defeating the Turks and Uzbeks, he made Isfahan his capital (in succession to Kazvin) and transformed it into a great city. Though cruel to his family, he was a great patron of art, architecture and garden design.
