Jantar Mantar Jaipur

The Jantar Mantar is an astronomical garden observatory featuring the world's largest stone sundial. The name, from Sanskrit, can be translated as 'Magical Device' (though Wikipedia gives the translation as 'calculating instrument'). It was built for the Maharaja Jai Singh II (1693 -1743) in the centre of Jaipur. The instruments were used to observe the movements of sun, moon, planets and stars. Through astrology and through vastu shastra they were taken to govern both fortune and design.
