Gardens in New South Wales, Australia

Australia has some nineteenth century colonial gardens, some botanic gardens and some modern parks and gardens designed by landscape architects. During the colonial period Australian garden designers tended to use European styles and European plants - to remind settlers of the Old Country. This changed in the 1970s. Ecological garden planting using  the indiginous flora of Australia became fashionable and Australian designers began to push forward with international styles of garden design - including the post-modern fashion of re-interpreting local culture in garden design. In addition to this list of Australia Garden Finder entries, around 600 private gardens to the public each year open under the Open Gardens Australia scheme. Also, see Garden Tours in Australia for information on tours, self-guided visits tailor-made tours and gardens open to the public.
