Henri Duchene and his son, Achille Duchene, worked on the restoration of several seventeenth century French gardens. From the last days of the monarchy until the Franco Prussian war of 1870-1, France had been under the influence of English romanticism and the landscape style. After 1870 there was a desire to re-assert national pride. This was a period when nationalism was sweeping Europe. The Duchenes were influenced by the Arts and Crafts approach seeking to use traditional good taste and construction methods.
