The 'Versailles of Westphalia' was built 1703-1734 on the site of a 16th century moated castle. It is near Oranienburg and surrounded by 1,000 ha of woodland. It has 8 km of avenues. The Baroque design has a resemblence to Het Loo in Holland, with also has a parterre and a fine Baroque fountain. The parterres were re-created by Achille Duchene. This 'formal' garden gives way to an eighteenth century style landscape park.
