Sackville-West, Vita

Born - Died : 1892 - 1962

A poet, novelist and gardener. In her lifetime Vita Sackville-West was well-known as the author of a column 'In your garden' published in a Sunday newspaper (The Observer). Since her death, Vita Sackville-West has become ever-more famous as the designer, with her husband Harold Nicholson, of Sissinghurst Garden. It is a prime example of the Arts and Crafts style, well-maintained by the National Trust. Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicholson were both homosexual, though they had children. Frolics took place in the gardens and it is interesting to speculate on the male and female influences in the garden design. One might see the geometry as masculine and the delicate planting as feminine.
