Nur, Jahan

Nur Jahan was the daughter of a Grand Vizier and became the wife of Jahangir. She was beautiful, well-educated and of strong character. Her husband gave there the name 'Light of the World (Nur Jahan). A Dutch traveler wrote that 'She erects very expensive buildings in all directions- "sarais", or halting places for travellers and merchants, and pleasure gardens and palaces such that no one has seen before'. Nur Jahan designed Itimadad ud Daula's Tomb Garden and her own tomb in Lahore, Shahdara. The below painting of her and Jahangir is thought to be in the Ram Bagh, for which Nur Jahan also did a design.
