The famous novellist also wrote a book on Italian Villas and their Gardens (Century Company, New York, 1904). It was influential during the Country Place Era. Her niece, Beatrix Farrand, was a founder member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Wharton alwo wrote a book on The Decoration of Houses (1897). She became famous in 1905 with the publication of The House of Mirth. Edith Wharton's own garden, The Mount, is open to the public.
