Surrey has chalk hills in the north and sandy soils elsewhere on which acid soils have developed and on which gardeners enjoy growing ericaceous plants. Gertrude Jekyll launched the Arts and Crafts style of garden design from her garden at Munstead Wood and there are many other examples of this style of garden design in Surrey, including Hatchlands and the RHS garden at Wisley. There are also two famous landscape gardens in Surrey: Painshill Park and Claremont Landscape Garden.
