Staffordshire is hilly in the north, with steep wooded valleys, and somewhat damaged by coal mining in the south. Amongst gardeners, Staffordshire is best known for two superb examples of the Mixed Style: Alton Towers and Biddulph Grange. Trentham is one of the best examples of the Italian revival gardens which preceded the Mixed Style in Victorian England.
