Underscar Manor

Underscar has 40 acres of gardens and woodland overlooking Lake Derwentwater. The garden was designed by Edward Kemp and is a fine example of the Mixed Style (the term he used for what is now seen as Victorian and eclectic. Underscar became a hotel and then reverted to being a Manor house owned by a Russian oligarch who was shot in Moscow soon after buying the manor. The house was designed by Charles Reed for William Oxley, in the Italianate architectural style (1856-1863)
