The author has freely borrowed from these books to illustrate his subject. In the recent work by Mr. K. HONDA, the diagrams of gardens from KITAMURA'S "Tsukiyama Teizo Den" are represented in a modern style of drawing by lithography, and some of these plates have been reproduced for the present work by Mr. E. KOSHIMA, the lithographer associated with Mr. HONDA. Full acknowledgments are tendered to both of these gentlemen. The help afforded by Mr. UDAKA SANZO in procuring matter, and by Mr. MAYEDA RENJIRO, in revising Japanese names, calls for thankful mention.
