Previous - Next

In the gardens of the nobility high moveable Screen Fences, forming a temporary square enclosure, were used for the purpose of screening games of football,a favourite pastime of the upper classes in former times. They are called "Mari-gaki" or "Mari-oki" meaning "Ball Fence." the "Ball Fence" is framed with wooden bars carried to a considerable height, like a cage, and finished at the top with ornamental open lattice-work. They are often handsomely lacquered or ornamented in colour.
