Lindera sericea Nightingale Fencing

Previous - Next

Some Bamboo Fences are made of thin unsplit stems packed closely together, and held between horizontal strips of larger size. Slender twigs of a birch-like wood (Lindera sericea)are sometimes similarly employed in combination with posts and longitudinal bands of stout bamboo. In such structures the top is left ragged to produce a rustic appearance, and they receive the poetical name of "Nightingale Fence" on account of their rural character.
