The foregoing description of the Kamakura Style would tend to show that the art of gardening, as subsequently practised, was already considerably developed. But it remained chiefly in the hands of priests, who applied it principally to the grounds of temples and monasteries, and enveloped it in sacred mysteries; and it was not yet reduced to rule as in later times.
