Sode-gaki sleeve-fence

Previous - Next

There are two classes of fences: ordinary ones that enclose the whole or a part of the garden, and the other called sode-gaki (sleeve-fence), short fences used to screen off one part from another, strongly resembling the sleeve of a kimono, not only in its shape, but in its coquettish use as well. According to the character of the garden, the kind of sode-gaki should be chosen, and when more than one is required, a repetition of the same type is not tolerated. Together with the stone water basin, it performs the important function of connecting the garden with the architecture, blending Nature with man's art.
