Of recent years reinforced concrete walls have intruded even into our gardens, mainly for economic reasons. However, the sight is by no means congenial to its surrounding. In order to relieve this, in some cases they are covered over with the bark of cryptomeria which is used a great deal for roofing rest-arbours or covering the walls of cha-seki to protect them against the rain and to afford a suitable natural background to the trees and plants in the garden.
