Theophrastus,

Born - Died : 372 BC - 288 BC

Theophrastus is known as 'the father of botany'. He studied under Aristotle and succeeded him in the Lyceum. Amongst many books he wrote on the 'History of Plants' and the 'Causes of Plants'. The first identifies approx 500 species and the latter with the circumstances connected with their growth. If these plants were grown in Aristotle's Lyceum it could be seen as world's first systematic botanic garden.
