Gibberd, Frederick

Born - Died : 1908 - 1984

English architect, town planner, landscape architect and friend of Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe. Frederick Gibberd was master planner and chief planner for Harlow New Town. The Gibberd Garden near Harlow is a fine example of the way in which the Abstract Style of garden design was influenced by the Arts and Crafts Style. Jellicoe observed that Frederick Gibberd's 'love of plants equalled that of architecture. . . Intensely interested in contemporary art he gradually created a private modern sculpture of garden of remarkable variety'. The sculpture collection was assembled by his wife Lady Gibberd.
