A landowner and businessman, Tree served in the First World War, became managing editor of Forum Magazine and Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Town and Country Planning in 1945. He wrote a History of Barbados and a memoir When the Moon was High. Jellicoe designed his garden at Shute House.
