An influential Neoplatonic philosopher, born in Egypt. Plotinus moved to Rome in 244 and advocated an ascetic and contemplative life. His writing drew upon the pre-Socratic philosophers, Plato and Aristotle. They had a profound influence on Christian philosophy and on the Ideal theory of art.
