A horticulturalist and landscape gardener. Russell studied botany at Cambridge and then went on a latter-day Grand Tour. He then took over direction of Sunningdale Nurseries, where Graham Stuart Thomas worked after 1956, and began to take on garden design commissions. His projects included the the Wiggins Teape HQ (known as the 'Hanging Gardens of Basingstoke', the rose garden in the former vegetable garden at Castle Howard, the Woodland Garden in Ray (Wray) Wood at Castle Howard, the flower garden at Seaton Delaval (1950), Glenveagh in Co Donegal, and the replanting of Folly Farm (1955).
