Finlay, Ian Hamilton

Born - Died : 1925 - 2006

A Scots poet and gardener. Ian Hamilton Finlay's first reputation was as 'Scotland's leading concrete poet'. This was an art in which the arrangement of the words on the page made a significant contribution to the poet's meaning. It was an art which led naturally to the arrangement of words on stone, wood and other materials. This, in turn, led naturally to the art of incorporating concrete poetry with garden design. Ian Hamilton Finlay has worked in several countries but his most significant project has been his own garden, Little Sparta, at Dunsyre near Edinburgh. Ian Hamilton Finlay's approach to garden design is best understood as post-modern.
