French painter, trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Georges Braque worked with Picasso on the development of Cubism between 1907 and 1914. The name was proposed by a critic. It repudiated all interest in themes, whether emotional, narrative, sensuous or historical. This led to an emphasis on pure form which had a profound influence on garden design, though the latter years of the twentieth century were spent in re-discovering the themes which had been repudiated, partly through the idea of Theme Gardens.
