Epicurus,

Born - Died : 341BC - 270BC

Greek philosopher, born in Samos. He held that pleasure is the chief good but the life he led was one of temperance and simplicity. Rather unfairly, 'Epicurean' is used to describe a person who indulges in sensual pleasures. Like Plato, he taught philosophy in a garden, or 'sacred grove'.
