Liibeskind was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States at the age of 13 years and became a United States citizen in 1965. As a child he was a music prodigy but decided to study architecture. He qualified at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1970 and took a postgraduate degree in History and Theory of Architecture at the School of Comparative Studies at Essex University in England.
