English artist whose work is related to the neoplasticism of Piet Mondrian. Ben Nicholson's second wife was Barbera Hepworth (see Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden). Nicholson believed that abstract art brought art back into the everyday world, through its influence on buildings and consumer products. The Nicholson Wall at Sutton Place is the largest and most important piece of abstract to have been sited in a British garden in the twentieth century.
