Quatremere de Quincy, Antoine-Chrysostome

A French antiquarian and editor of a 2 volume Dictionaire historique d'architecture.. He was imprisioned, briefly, during the French revolution, and became secretary of the Academy des Beaux Arts under the Bourbons.His Essay on the Nature, the End and the Means of Imitation in the Fine Arts influenced J C Loudon. Quatremere argued that landscape gardening 'in the irregular style' could not be admitted to the circle of the fine arts. He took the Neoplatonic view, that artists should 'imitate' the primary geometrical forms. Quatremere was imprisioned during the Terror, for defending La Fayette, but becake keeper of Public Arts and Monuments under the Bourbons.
