There was a glass conservatory on this site from 1898 to 1934, when it was replaced with the present garden - in a blend of Italian, French and English styles. Entrance is through Vanderbilt Gate (from the Vanderbilt Mansion which once stood on Fifth Avenue). The French sector of the garden has statuary by a German sculptor Walter Schott's Three Dancing Maidens (1910). There is also a statue of the the characters Mary and Dickon from Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden.
