Northumberland has two outstanding gardens, though neither is quite as good as one feels they ought to be: Alnwick Castle Garden and Cragside Garden. The former could have become the best twentieth century garden in England. The latter could still, with better planting, be the best gardenesque woodland garden in Northumberland and perhaps the whole north of England.
