Bath and North Somerset

Bath is one of the pleasantest towns in England and a good base for garden visits. Prior Park has no car parking but a bus service operates from Bath, or you can walk. The other gardens are best visited by car: Claverton Manor is 2 miles south of Bath; Bowood is 15 miles north east of Bath; the delightful garden made by Harold Peto at Iford Manor is 7 miles south east of Bath.

Claverton Manor Garden » An eighteenth century house designed by Jeffry Wyatville and the home of the American Museum. The gardens are a subtle blend of both the remnants of the old manorial pleasure grounds and parkland landscape. Many period features dating from the 1820s survive, including the grotto, the balustrade and curtain walling as well as ornamental stone work. Attributed to George Vivian, son of the original owner of Claverton Manor, John Vivian, they are laid out in the Italianate style of the mid 1800s. The garden has beautiful views of the Limpley Stoke Valley. Bowood Gardens
Bowood Gardens » <p>An eighteenth century house and park with a nineteenth century 'Italian' garden. Lancelot Brown's plan for the park survives and is one of the clearest examples of his <a href="http://www.gardenvisit.com/history_theory/garden_landscape_design_articles/historic_design_styles/serpentine_garden_design_style">serpentine style of garden design</a>. It has circular clumps, an encircling tree belt and a serpentine lake. A Doric temple sits beside the lake.
