Newgate Street

Previous - Next

At Old Bailey begins Newgate Street, continuing the general line of Holborn towards the heart of the City. To the right, beyond the Central Criminal Court, diverges Warwick Lane, leading to Paternoster Row. The first house in the lane, to the right, bears a quaint relief of 1668, representing Warwick, the King Maker (1428-70), whose palace stood here. Beyond Cutlers Hall, with terra-cotta reliefs by George Tinworth, opens Warwick Square, in which an early 18th century building, occupied by the Oxford University Press, preserves a fragment of the Roman Wall in its basement, showing the constructive work of brick and stone.
