Chelsea Embankment

Previous - Next

CHELSEA EMBANKMENT, a fine promenade opened in 1874, with picturesque views towards Battersea Park on the opposite (south) bank, stretches from Chelsea Bridge to Battersea Bridge, a distance of over a mile. Chelsea Bridge, or Victoria Suspension Bridge, is about 700 feet long and was opened in 1858. In Chelsea Bridge Road, which runs hence to the north-west, skirting Ranelagh Gardens, are the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine and Chelsea Barracks, occupied by Foot Guards. The parade service in the Guards' Chapel at 11 a.m. on Sunday is open to the public. On the Embankment, about 400 yards to the west of the bridge, is the main entrance to the Gardens of Chelsea Hospital (open free), which command a fine view of the beautiful brick buildings of Chelsea Hospital.
