Timur (1336-1405) is also known as Temur, Taimur, Timour, Timur Lenk, Timur i Leng, Tamerlane, Tamburlaine, or Taimur-e-Lang (Timur the Lame). He founded the Timurid dynasty and is one of Central Asia's most famous mongol Conquerors. The following biography of Timur is by Clements R Markham and was written as an introduction to his edition of Clavijo's travels. Markham explains that 'Before accompanying the good old Spanish knight from his native land, through the regions of the far east, to the court of Timur, it will be well to refresh the memory with a brief sketch of the life of that mighty conqueror.'
