Hedges are not in general use in France; the plants employed in field-hedges, in the northern parts, are the hawthorn and the birch; or a mixture of native shrubs, as the hazel, briar, laburnum, &c. In ornamental hedges the French have attained great perfection; for these the favourite plants are the yew, the hornbeam, and the box; and for tall hedges, the lime and the elm.
