As in the case of stones, the origin of different trees should be respected in the gardens: none should be planted in positions at variance with their natural habit of growth. Pine trees are a great favourite: no garden is really complete without them. They are trained to form artistic forms or lean over the water, often their branches being supported by crutches from the pond. A beautifully shaped pine is generally used in a prominent position to centralise or balance the whole garden. Not only does it symbolise longevity, but it has a dignity of its own, a dignity of masculine power in its form and pose.
