Garden Hills

Previous - Next

As garden hills are generally formed with the earth dug to make the pond, we may consider them here briefly. While it is difficult to get a natural effect with a solitary hill, too many of them, arranged one after another, become too artificial. In an ordinary hill garden, three or four of them, varying in sizes of good proportion and well placed, generally make a good effect. One should serve as the background for the cascade. They should be so sloped as to give a sense of stability and peace. There should be a height for a resting place to enjoy the view of the garden, or the surrounding scenery.
