Turf lawns in Japanese gardens

With the importation of European civilisation, garden parties became a vogue among the wealthy, and turf was introduced into our gardens without much jarring the harmony with the traditional forms. Moreover, with the building of European houses came gardens of Western style, though they have not made much headway. As a reaction against intoxication with things foreign, cha-no-yu was revived, which helped to retain refinement and Nippon taste in our gardens.
