The very origin of the garden in Nippon is obscure. However, like many other things, it is more than likely that the art of garden-making was first imported from the Continent, either direct from China or through Korea, as the intercourse with the latter has been frequent since the invasion of the peninsula by the Empress Jingo Kogo, in the beginning of the third century A. D.
