It is now clearly ascertained that the earthy and saline substances found in plants are as essential as any other part of their food, and that if any soil be deficient in the substances of this nature which are required by the plants which are to be grown in it, those plants will not be in a healthy state until the salts in which the earth is deficient have been supplied to it.
