An important design principle of Gertrude Jekyll's is the creation of Garden Pictures. The idea was not, of course, her own. It came from almost two centuries of picturesque tradition. But she was emphatic in her belief that the garden designer should herself, or himself, be an artist. They can learn from other artists in other media, but the artist's imagination and judgement are essential to the design of good gardens.
