Standen Garden surrounds the Arts & Crafts house designed by architect Philip Webb in the 1890s. It is dramatically situated on a steep hillside overlooking the Medway Valley and Ashdown Forest. Large Terraces and Lawns combine with more intimate areas including a Victorian Quarry Garden, Kitchen Garden, Bamboo Garden with swimming pond and wild flower meadow. Planting is a mixture of rare trees and shrubs introduced by the first owner Margaret Beale, later designs to reduce maintenance, and current replanting of the original schemes. The Garden is currently undergoing some
restoration work to bring back many of the original features and plants.
