Gardens in Thailand

Thailand has three types of garden: (1) Buddhist monastery and temple gardens (2) royal palace gardens (3) hotel and resort gardens. Thailand has a tropical climate and Thai gardens have lush planting. Until c1990, gardens in Thai villages were used almost exclusively for vegetables and fruit trees. Since then, the general Thai population has become more interested in ornamental plants and many 'formal' resort-style gardens with exotic species have been made. However, with more Thais traveling and with foreign gardeners settling in Thailand, some very interesting and very personal gardens are now being made using hitherto unexplored properties of many of the 12000 indigenous Thai species.
