The Botanical Garden was established in 1890 by E. L. Greene, the first chairman of the Department of Botany. In the 1920s the garden was moved to Strawberry Canyon with a landscape design by J. W. Gregg from the University's Department of Landscape Design. The garden was organized on a geographical basis in settings resembling native habitats. There are over 12,000 different kinds of plants from around the world displayed over 34 acres.
