Beauregard is a small 16th century chateau in the Loire Valley that has been much renovated since 1992. "Le Jardin des Portraits" was created by Gilles Clément, who designed the Parc André Citroën in Paris, and consists of 12 garden rooms. "Le Jardin des Enfants" was created by the current Countess du Pavilion in 2008 for her 12 children and 12 new oak trees were planted. The 18th century ice house has restored in 2008. There is also a rose garden and chapel. The castle itself holds an impressive portrait collection that tells the story 315 years of French political history (from 1328 to 1643).

I visited this garden and chateau in the fall, so it was not at its best. It is quite large and interestingly developed. The chateau is in private hands, the same owners I believe for a few hundred years. Be sure to see the portrait gallery and its unique floor tiles. It still has the feel of a family home.

Be prepared for much walking as the garden features are a long way from the chateau and reached through a series of walks through a landscape park. The main section was added around 1995 and designed by Gilles Clément, who also was responsible for Parc Andre Citroen in Paris and the King's Garden at Blois. It is a series of 12 garden rooms divided by tall hedges. Within each is a perennial planting devoted to single colours. Plant and garden photographers will find plenty of subjects to interest them in the various colour and textural combinations plus the orchard of trees with decorative bark. There is also an interesting rose garden. The walk back to the chateau can take you past a newly planted woodland area dotted with decorative garden statues.
At the time of my visit, there was a Volvo enthusiasts gathering so much of the lawn area approaching was occupied by vintage Vovos and equally vintage owners. Another layer of interest if you like. The portrait gallery within the chateau is also worth visiting.
